Chapter 5: Where Class Fund Dey Go?

As I check group chat for afternoon, everybody don shift focus to the missing ₦100,000 plus.

As I on phone, notification just dey jump. E clear say dem don shift from my matter go bigger fish.

The people wey need money pass dey press Timi:

[Yesterday you talk say each person go get ₦1,660.]

[How e take turn to owe ₦1,000 overnight?]

[Where class fund really enter?]

People wey never talk since, dey drop receipts, dey quote old messages. You fit feel say some dey calculate for calculator with red pen like market women for Tejuosho.

I post screenshot of class scholarship awards:

[See am here. This ₦6,000 Outstanding Management Award for Timi—no be our class fund be that?]

[This ₦8,000 Best Organization Award for study committee cultural performance—e resemble, abi?]

I add small caption: "No be una say make we dey transparent? Make una see am with una eye."

...

As I post am, na only class committee no shock.

People dey type like say na urgent matter. Na only committee dey quiet, like say dem dey wait for rain to stop before dem cross road.

[So una use class fund take give Timi and study committee scholarship? Who get that idea?]

[Even for primary school, teachers dey use class fund reward good students. Now our class dey do am?]

[Class fund suppose be scholarship for committee? I want all my money back!]

[@Timi, return the money!]

Some people dey even drop "oya oya oya!" and "Timi pay up!" stickers. The heat don shift finally. Like market women see new gist, everybody face turn Timi. My own wahala just disappear like last week’s rain.

Before, I think say na school give those awards. But later, as I waka pass class adviser office, I hear say na all those bonuses come from our own class fund. Dem just share am give Timi and study committee, no tell us.

That gist pain me. I just shake head, dey reason how people fit dey share money without telling the rest. E resemble those government palliative wey dey disappear.

Halima, wey first drag me, vex pass everybody:

[So una dey use everybody money reward Timi and study committee?]

[No be everybody suppose approve before una use class fund for scholarship?]

[Which kind standard una dey use give scholarship? Na just to fill una pocket?]

Halima voice dey loud, and e dey echo all our pain. People dey add "Gbam!" "Correct!" under her messages.

As I see say people don finally get sense, I off my phone, sleep well.

That sleep sweet me like cold fanta for hot sun. For once, wahala pass my head, and I just dey float for dreamland like jollof rice for party.

But my study committee roommate no fit sleep again. She even drag me out from under wrapper:

"Ifedike, you dey cause confusion for class, you dey spoil unity, you know?"

I just laugh, cover myself back:

"I no know o. I dey busy since, I taya. Go ask Timi yourself."

For my mind, I dey thank God say the heat no dey my side again. Tomorrow, na new day for another wahala. For this Nigeria, problem no dey finish, but at least, today I sleep well.
