The whole Benny White situation weighed on me for days. Thankfully, Mom seemed to be behaving—just giggling at her phone and not sneaking around.

I’m a university instructor, teaching career planning. Honestly, it’s a blow-off class—a win for me and an easy A for the students.

Today, I was in a mood and brought my baggage into the classroom. The students were buzzing:

“He’s so cute!”

“Oh my god, did you see that play?!”

“He’s everywhere—I just saw him in a League of Legends ad on Twitch!”

Normally I’d tune them out, but today a group was really getting on my nerves.

I tiptoed over. The rest of the class watched, sensing drama.

I craned my neck to see what they were watching. On the iPad was a replay of an esports match. In the bottom right, the main player: black hoodie, headphones, laser-focused on the screen.

The more I watched, the more familiar he looked.

A lightbulb went off in my head. I snatched the iPad. Amid the students’ gasps, I stared at the screen.

“Benny White?!”

Isn’t this the punk trying to scam my mom out of her savings?!

The students went wild when I called out his name.

“Right, Professor Miller! He’s the hottest game streamer right now!”

“Yeah, he’s only 25—prime boyfriend material!”

I eyed the girl who said that. She was blushing, clearly deep in fantasy land. Judging by her look, she’d probably already imagined a house in the best school district.

“Professor Miller, didn’t think you, at your age, would know Benny White!”

I shot him a glare. “Who are you calling old? Everyone, add a 3,000-word essay this week—on how to spot a scammer!”

“Ahhhhh?!”

Amid groans, I strode out of the classroom, feeling like a boss.

Back in the office, I immediately Googled “Benny White.”

Within minutes, a tidal wave of info popped up.

“Genius gamer rakes in $100k a month!”

“Star streamer Ben White conquers Twitch!”

“Is he a gaming prince or a hidden mastermind?”

...

Honestly, today’s online headlines are just as clickbaity and cringey as when I was in college.

If Ben White is so amazing, what does he want with my mom?

After thinking it over, I could only conclude...
