Chapter 4: College Corridors & Cruel Rumours

03

The next day, I went to the common lecture hall. The AC was never cold enough, and the desks had more carved initials than smooth surface. The air smelled faintly of sweat, cheap deodorant, and the remains of someone’s tiffin.

Ritika was surrounded by a group of girls, basking in their flattery. She wore a new salwar suit—probably bought after her Insta fame—her glass bangles jangling as she laughed. Somewhere nearby, a boy whistled the latest Bollywood song.

As the official girlfriend of the chemistry department’s genius heartthrob, Ritika was the centre of attention. First-year girls kept glancing at her, as if standing close might bring them some luck.

Everyone asked about her and Arjun’s love story. "How did you meet? When did he propose? Did he do filmi style—down on one knee?" Their voices dripped with curiosity and envy.

As soon as I entered, the chatter died. Every head turned. For a second, it was like the background music in a daily soap had been switched off. The tension was thick enough to cut with a spoon.

Their gazes were full of provocation, mockery, and that special blend of pity only college girls manage. I straightened my kurta, adjusted my dupatta, and walked past them, pretending not to notice.

I acted like I didn’t care. Amma always says, "Beta, duniya sirf pakke aam pe patthar maarti hai." Let them talk.

After I sat down, a girl sneered behind me.

"Soch rahi thi koi toh raat bhar royi hogi, aaj college nahi aayegi."

"Kya yaar, skin toh abhi bhi thick hi hai."

I turned to her. "Kyun, tumhe laga main ro rahi thi? Ya tumhe khud Arjun pasand hai, chupke chupke ro li?" My words were sharper than I expected, but I didn’t care.

She stiffened, glancing at Ritika. "Don’t talk nonsense. Not everyone is as shameless as you."

I raised an eyebrow. "At least I had the guts to chase the person I liked. Tum toh apna crush bhi admit nahi kar sakti."

"You..."

She faltered, finger shaking, eyes glistening. I didn’t look away.

"Enough, everyone stop talking."

Ritika shot her a look, then walked up to my desk.

"Meera, I don’t care what happened between you and Bhaiya Arjun before. I just hope you won’t try to get close to him again, okay?"

Her voice was syrupy, the perfect blend of hurt and authority—a saas-bahu serial heroine come to life.

Instantly, whispers spread like wildfire.

"Get close? Meera tried to get close to Arjun after he got with Ritika? Matlab full homewrecker vibes, bro."

"Aree, Meera toh full drama queen nikli yaar."

I looked up at Ritika. "I have never tried to get close to Arjun after you two got together."

Ritika’s eyes got even redder. She nodded, acting all noble. "Yes, you haven’t. As long as you don’t pester Bhaiya Arjun again, I can pretend nothing happened before."

[Supporting girl toh irritating hai yaar. Heroine ek tight slap de de, please!]

[Full rona dhona, supporting girl ne toh apni kismat bhi ro ke uda di.]

[Heroine is way better. At least she didn’t do drama after breaking up.]
