Chapter 5: Farewell to Love and Loss
“These are wedding gifts Mr. Whitmore prepared for Lady Savannah. He even embroidered the veil himself.”
It’s tradition for the groom to embroider the veil, praying for happiness. The words stung.
The red veil, with embroidered lovebirds, stung my eyes.
Ethan never gave me a wedding. All I had were two white candles burning through the night.
So love and lovelessness really are worlds apart.
I knew Savannah had her maid show off on purpose.
But she miscalculated.
I’m leaving. I don’t care anymore.
“Is that so?” I smiled faintly. “Well, congratulations to your lady.”
The maid stared at me, shocked.
I ignored her and moved on.
As I entered the study, I saw Savannah in her bright wedding dress, spinning and giggling, showing off for Ethan. The laughter rang false, but Ethan watched her, smiling.
“Brother, do I look pretty in this dress?”
“You look beautiful.”
Ethan gazed at her, eyes soft. I felt invisible.
When he saw me, his face darkened.
“Why are you here?”
I thought my heart was numb, but pain surged up, raw and hot.
“Brother, why are you so harsh to her?”
Savannah pouted, grabbed my arm, and dug her nails in, smiling sweetly. “I’m about to get married. Could you give me this pendant?”
She smiled on the outside, but her nails bit into my skin.
I flinched and shook her off.
Savannah fell, crying: “If she didn’t want to give it, fine, but why push me?”
Before I could speak, Ethan slapped me to the floor.
My belly slammed into the corner of the desk—a searing pain twisted through me, and hot blood gushed down my legs.
As Ethan helped Savannah up, he yanked the pendant from my waist: “It’s just a pendant. What’s wrong with giving it to her?”
“Anything but this. Not this pendant!” I could barely get the words out.
Ignoring the pain, I lunged for it.
It was my mother’s only keepsake.
Savannah said innocently, “Then can you give yourself to me, too?”
“Is that so?”
Ethan glared, grinding his teeth.
The pain was unbearable. I couldn’t speak.
Ethan clenched his fists, then suddenly laughed: “Fine! Lila, since you care so much about this, I’ll destroy it!”
He smashed the pendant to the floor.
—Crash!
The pendant shattered.
My heart shattered, too.
I screamed, scrambling for the pieces.
Ethan had the maids restrain me, but I broke free, picking up the last shard. My hands bled.
