Chapter 5: Standing My Ground

We got up early for the return visit. The gifts were ready—dates, brown sugar, whiskey, two hens.

Marcus carried the things, I walked slowly behind.

Seeing Mom, I wanted to cry.

Marcus was accompanied by several uncles. Mom pulled me into the room.

"How does your husband treat you? Are the Taylors easy to get along with?"

"He treats me well. The Taylors are okay, just..." I blushed and whispered, "The wedding night hurt a lot. It still hurts."

Mom, experienced, understood right away.

"Let your dad talk to him. You can’t be rough in bed."

"Mom, mom..."

"Girl, don’t be shy. A couple’s life has to be harmonious. Men always think about this. If you turn him down every time, feelings will fade.

Listen to me, if you’re uncomfortable, tell him to change. You’ve got a mouth, use it. Understand?"

I could only nod.

Living with Marcus now was like walking a tightrope.

It couldn’t be perfect all at once.

Dad called Marcus for a private talk. When he came back, he looked at me, hesitated, then stared at me like he’d made up his mind.

We didn’t stay at my parents’ house that night. After returning, he didn’t touch me.

But he tossed and turned in bed like he was restless.

"I’ll go to the city tomorrow."

I nodded lightly.

After hesitating, I moved closer to him.

His body was warm—no wonder he couldn’t sleep.

When he pressed down to kiss me, he whispered, "I’ll be gentle..."

Marcus left before dawn. Thinking of last night, I covered my face with both hands.

After lingering, I got up.

As soon as I opened the door, Lily from the eldest branch called out, "Aunt Natalie, you’re up. I’ll get water for you to wash."

The oldest of the kids was only twelve or thirteen, like my sister.

They were sweet, so I couldn’t be stingy.

The coffee cake Mom brought back wouldn’t keep in the heat, so I took it out to share with the kids.

One piece each, but second brother’s sons wanted more.

I had only four or five pieces left, not enough.

"We agreed on one piece each."

"Aunt Natalie is stingy, Aunt Natalie is stingy..."

The kids got louder, as if they wanted the whole world to know.

I was so annoyed.

I thought, next time I won’t give them any, I’ll eat it myself.
