Chapter 10: Stolen Kisses and Regret
After that, Lily moved in. She stuck to Ethan’s side like a shadow.
Sometimes, I thought about what I’d overheard: that I was just a stand-in for his first love. But Ethan still refused to let me go.
Dinner was a silent war—Lily sitting between us, Ethan distracted, me picking at cold food. She followed him to work, filled the house with her chatter.
If he loved her so much, why keep me around? Was I just another way for him to punish me?
...
Ethan started coming home late. Tonight, he stumbled in, reeking of whiskey, tie askew. His eyes were bloodshot, skin pale under the lamp.
He grinned at me:
"Aubrey, you’re getting more and more stubborn."
He pinned me to the sofa, but still kept a hand behind my back so I wouldn’t hit the armrest. His eyes were stormy, wild.
"Ethan, where’s your Lily?"
He just sneered:
"I lost her!"
"She went out with you today!"
"I lost her a long time ago!"
...
I looked away, unable to meet his eyes. He pressed his forehead to mine, his breath ragged.
"Aubrey, you didn’t drink milk today either, did you?"
"After I left, did you pour the milk away?"
...
I hadn’t had a drop in days. Maybe I was just as stubborn as he was. But Ethan never cared about my choices.
He warmed a new glass, sat in front of me.
"Drink it!"
I pressed my lips together, refusing to look at him. He’d force it if he had to. Tonight, he looked angrier than usual.
When I wouldn’t give in, he sighed, then tipped the glass back and took a long drink himself. Then he kissed me, hard, pinching my chin until my teeth parted. Milk flooded my mouth, sweet and thick and suffocating.
I sobbed, choking, and only then did he stop.
The night pressed in, silent and merciless. I stared at the vase of dried flowers by the door, wishing I could disappear.
He pulled me into his arms, voice breaking as he whispered apologies:
"Don’t cry, I was wrong, Aubrey, it’s my fault…"
"Don’t cry, okay, Aubrey…"
Ethan’s lips were on mine, the taste of milk and regret thick between us. And for a second, I almost believed the lie.
