Chapter 5: Colliding Worlds
For the first time, I dreaded the weekend. Arjun was swamped with work, and I only saw him once at the chai café downstairs. I pretended to answer a call, avoiding his eyes. Friday lunch break, a WhatsApp from Arjun: [Where this week?]
We always met somewhere new—hotel, car, even outdoors sometimes. I whipped out my pre-prepared excuse: [Sorry, Mr. Arjun, have to go home for Ma’s birthday.]
Arjun: [Alright. Didn’t we agree to keep work and private life separate? When it’s personal, just call me by my name.]
Hai Ram, how to keep things separate now, especially after seeing him grilling another team leader in the morning meeting: "Did you come up with this plan with your feet?" The chill in the air could freeze anyone.
When it was my turn, I was trembling. Arjun looked straight at me: "This plan is all for show. Did you consider if it’s actually doable?"
Me: "………"
And now I’m supposed to sleep with this man? No way, yaar. I’m choosing abstinence this week.
His WhatsApp DP—an old fort in Rajasthan—blinked at me. I scrolled back to our first messages, nostalgia and irritation mixing in my chest. When he snapped at work, he was all icy authority, the kind of boss who makes grown men stammer. How did I ever think he was just a regular guy? My mind and body were at war, and for once, the mind was winning.
