Chapter 12: An Invitation and an Emergency
The front door opened—my wife stepped in, arms full of groceries.
She froze at the sight of Detective Derek, then smiled. "You’re the officer working on the gifted class case, right? Still no clues? I made lasagna—there’s plenty, if you’re hungry."
Detective Derek waved it off. "Thanks, but I’ve got to finish my questions."
Suddenly, his phone buzzed. His face changed. "What? Another case? Where? Okay—preserve the scene, I’m on my way!"
He stood abruptly. "Sorry, Dr. Harris, there’s been another murder. I have to go. Thanks for your time."
He paused at the door, looking at my daughter beside my wife. "Is this your daughter? She’s adorable."
I smiled, taking Ellie’s hand. "Ellie, say goodbye to Detective."
She hid behind my leg, waving shyly. Detective Derek watched her a long moment before the door closed and his footsteps faded down the hall.
