Chapter 9: The Real Plot Begins
In switched-daughter stories, there’s always a male lead. My sister’s voice echoed in my head, full of excitement and dread: “Watch out for the rich guy with the tragic backstory!”
The fake daughter is madly in love with him, determined to marry no one else. She plots, she schemes, she’s willing to do anything to keep him. I could practically hear the ominous music in the background.
But the two families are tied together in a business marriage, so the male lead is supposed to marry the real daughter. There’s always a contract, a family alliance, or some other deal that means the ‘real’ daughter is suddenly front and center—whether she likes it or not.
From then on, the fake daughter grows jealous and starts plotting against the real one…
I swallowed, thinking of every plot twist my sister had ever warned me about. But as Emily glanced over and gave me a faint, genuine smile, I wondered—maybe our story would be different. Maybe, for once, the real and the fake daughter could both find their happy ending.
But as the class whispered about Emily’s fiancé and all eyes turned to me, I realized—happy endings aren’t guaranteed. Especially not for girls like me.
